Living in Liverpool as a Student
Liverpool is one of the most student-friendly cities in the world, welcoming up to 70,000 students from around the world each year. Situated in northwest England, Liverpool is best known as the birthplace of The Beatles, but it also has a strong maritime history, a thriving arts culture and fabulous architecture.

Liverpool is a very inclusive city with a diverse range of food on offer, plenty to see and do and best of all, a very affordable cost of living. Offering a huge range of shops, pubs, clubs and restaurants as well as art galleries and lots of live music, Liverpool truly has something for everyone.

Universities in Liverpool
Liverpool is home to four universities, namely the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University and the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Though each has a distinct syllabus and ethos, all are connected by their commitment to embodying the diverse and welcoming atmosphere of the city they call home.
At TJT Students, our range of Liverpool student accommodation is specifically chosen to enable easy access to the city centre and to all of the universities, whether you choose to walk, cycle or take the bus. Navigating around a new city can be a challenge so our team is always on hand to help you choose the best accommodation for your needs, preferences and budget.

Student life in Liverpool
Though a full time university course will keep you occupied for at least 21 hours a week, that still leaves plenty of time for exploring, socialising and participating in sports and hobbies. Liverpool is the perfect place to meet your crowd, to find out what really makes you tick and to try new things.

With a vast array of extra-curricular activities on offer, from waterfront picnics to attending concerts and football matches and everything in between, you will never be bored being a student in Liverpool. Many of the venues in the city offer attractive student discounts so make sure to sign up and make your budget go further while having fun, immersing yourself in the culture and meeting new people.

Living costs for students in Liverpool
Typically, students should budget £1000 per month to live in Liverpool. This is made up of rent, which tends to cost about £150 a week, food and household goods, public transport, socialising and miscellaneous costs such as books and clothes.
Liverpool is a reasonably affordable city to live in and student discounts can help stretch the budget further. It is, of course, possible to live more frugally, by cooking from scratch, walking or cycling instead of taking the bus and reducing non-discretionary spending where possible.

Art, museums and festivals
Liverpool is the perfect place for lovers of performing arts, with plenty of galleries, theatres and concerts on offer all year round. The Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool offer some of the best artwork in the country and best of all, as a student, you can enjoy unlimited free entry!

The Open Eye Gallery and the Bluecoat are the one-stop shop for film, photography and visual arts, while the Liverpool Biennial is the largest free international contemporary art festival in the country, held every 2 years between June and September.

Entry is also free to the city's museums, including the Museum of Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The University of Liverpool also welcomes all students to its renowned Victoria Gallery and Museum.

Nightlife and live music
Liverpool is renowned for its nightlife and live music scene, boasting over 250 bars, pubs and clubs.
As the UK's capital of music, it's of little surprise that the city hosts a wide range of music festivals every year, including Liverpool Sound City, the Liverpool International Music Festival and Creamfields, among many others.
As well as the large festivals, the Smithdown Road Festival is a very popular live music event that takes place every year in the spring.

Theatre and performance
Liverpool is home to many theatres, including the Liverpool Empire, the Liverpool Playhouse, the Everyman Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and the Unity Theatre, as well as many smaller live performance spaces and cinemas, including the floating cinema at the Royal Albert Dock.

Relaxing and eating out
Liverpool's waterfront is a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic or a meal in one of the many cafes or restaurants. There is also ample green space, including Sefton Park which is a delightful and peaceful outdoor nature haven.

There are many beaches within easy reach of Liverpool, including Crosby Beach and Formby, which are a huge draw to nature-loving students who are keen to see some local wildlife as well as modern artwork.

Liverpool caters to a diverse range of tastes with Lebanese, Italian, Indian and Chinese food easily available, as well as British favourites and fine dining. Liverpool is home to Europe's oldest Chinatown and the restaurants in the area are certainly worth a visit during your time in the city.

Shopping
Liverpool is famed for its array of shops, with over 160 shops in the Liverpool ONE complex alone. The Met Quarter offers a range of upmarket and designer brands, while thriftier students will delight in Liverpool's exciting range of vintage and independent boutiques.

Sport
Liverpool is home to two Premiership football teams - Liverpool and Everton - and competition can be fierce between rival teams, though it's friendly banter really and most fans just enjoy spending time with like-minded friends.

Bars such as McCooleys, Bierkeller and the Brookhouse have big screens showcasing the best sporting events, including rugby and horse racing, which can also be seen live not far from the city centre at Aintree Racecourse and St Helens rugby and football club.

Being a waterfront city, there are also plenty of watersports on offer, including open water swimming, paddleboarding, sailing and kayaking.

International student information
Liverpool is very welcoming to international students, revelling in the breadth of experience they bring with them and gently integrating them into its culture. International students are encouraged to join in with university clubs and extra-curricular events, building connections that can lead to future internships and job opportunities as well as lifelong friendships.
