About the City of Liverpool
The city of Liverpool is located in the North West of England, situated on the estuary of the world-famous River Mersey, which links to the Irish Sea.
By road, Liverpool is approximately 200 miles from the capital cities of England (London), Scotland (Edinburgh) and Wales (Cardiff), and by sea is roughly 140 miles from Dublin and Belfast. The nearest cities to Liverpool are Manchester and Chester, with the origins of both cities linked to the Roman occupation of Britain from AD43 – AD410.
The Wirral peninsula is also part of Merseyside, and Liverpool is connected to The Wirral by two road tunnels (The Kingsway and Queensway tunnels) and also a rail tunnel that is entered from Liverpool city centre and passes under the River Mersey.
Liverpool is a historic city, with historians able to trace it back to 1190, when it was known as ‘Liuerpul’. On the 28th of August 1207, King John granted ‘Liuerpul’ the official status of a town when it was named in his Royal Charter.
In 1880 Liverpool officially became a city, with a population of more than 600,000. Around the turn of the century, Liverpool’s most iconic buildings were built around the term of the centre, including the world-famous Liver Building and Cunard Buildings.
Liverpool also boasts two cathedrals, as famously outlined by the fold son ‘In my Liverpool home’ : “If you want a Cathedral, we’ve got one to spare…”
Located on either end of the aptly-named Hope Street, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral was built on St James Mount between 1904 and 1978, having initially been designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and is the fifth largest cathedral in Europe. Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (affectionally referred to as ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’) is Liverpool’s Catholic cathedral. It is vastly different in architecture with a more modern design, officially opened on the 14th of May 1967.
